WHAAAM!
An Auditory-Visual Exploration
An Auditory-Visual Exploration
WHAAAM! is a project that explores our auditory
world through illustration and design.
The project explores and reintroduces the world of sound through proportionate visual parallels, in tandem with matching audio, to truly immerse the audience in an auditory-visual experience.

Chapter To Know
The first step, To Know, creates a
logical connection with the audience, bringing validity to the project, despite
the absurdity of the idea of sound being visual.
In this first chapter, the “information brochure” features research and studies done by others on how sound is visualised scientifically, as well as interviews and its use in mass media and our daily lives.
Infographic illustration was used in this chapter as it is about relaying information directly. I wanted to clearly represent the facts to the readers.

To Feel
The second chapter, To Feel, helps humanise the publication
by creating an emotional connection with the reader.
This chapter is a personal journal entry to show how sound plays a role in our lives. It features our relation to the things we hear every day, such as speech, noise and/or environment.
The bolder and more expressive style mixed with photography creates a fantasy of our reality warped with our emotional perceptions.

To Explore
In the third chapter To Explore, we push the audience a further to see sound beyond what they know and feel.
As this publication is meant to introduce a progressive appreciation of sound, the characters were designed with the chapters of To Know and To Feel in mind.
Using logical reasoning with textures, size and form, in conjunction with my personal experience being in a wind band I created unique characters for each instrument and the sound they make.

To Gain Wisdom
In the final chapter, To Gain
Wisdom, we apply what we have learned about
sound in the past three chapters to
create something greater and beyond what we’ve seen in
each individual chapter individually. This idea has
been applied by many to create greater things with sound such as music.
In this chapter, using more expressive illustrations while still being rooted to proportion and reason, I created a storyboard bringing the musical composition “...And The Antelope Play” to life.
